Aibing Yu, Presentation Title: "Intelligentization of Process Industries: Computational Particle Technology and Applications"
Abstract:Granular science and technology is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research field, whose core lies in understanding the relationship between the macroscopic and microscopic properties of granular materials - a widely existing but not yet fully understood state of matter. The macroscopic behavior of granular materials is governed by interactions between particles and their interactions with surrounding gas or liquid and walls. Therefore, in-depth understanding of these interaction forces is key to promoting truly interdisciplinary granular material research and achieving universally applicable results. Numerical research at the particle scale can effectively achieve this goal, which is based on detailed microscopic dynamic information, including the forces and trajectories of each particle in the research system. Over the past two decades, thanks to the rapid development of simulation technology and computer technology, this research has rapidly spread worldwide. This presentation will focus on the recent progress of my laboratory - Simulation and Modeling of Particulate Systems Laboratory (SIMPAS). Through examples, it will show that the study of small particles is closely related to many difficult problems in big science, and prove that particle-scale research methods have gradually become powerful tools of great value for both basic research and engineering applications. Finally, a brief discussion on future R&D needs and connections with AI will be conducted.
